The headstones at Holy Cross provide an historical record of the people buried there. The headstones are inscribed with names, birth dates, dates of death, and often the names of a spouse and children. Many of the early headstones also identify the county of Ireland from which the buried person emigrated, providing a rich resource for genealogical study.
The stones at Holy Cross are variously made of sandstone, limestone, white bronze (cast metal), granite and marble. Many stones carry the names of local Halifax stone carvers from the past such as Griffin & Keltie, Wood and Sanford.
The Irish Celtic Cross is a familiar silhouette at Holy Cross, as are other forms of crosses on the monuments of the Cemetery.
